OSHA 1910.146 requires a retrieval system whenever workers enter a permit-required confined space. For vertical spaces more than 5 feet deep, a mechanical retrieval device like a tripod with 3-way recovery SRL is required. Workers must wear a full body harness with the retrieval line attached near shoulder level.

A 3-way recovery SRL (Class SRL-R) combines fall arrest, raising, and lowering in one device. During normal work it operates as fall protection. In emergency rescue situations, the retrieval function lets the attendant raise or lower the worker without entering the hazardous atmosphere.
